Accessibility Is In Your Best Interest - Make Your Web Site Accessible

Web accessibility or the number of people who are able to use your web site, is an important element for all sites.  Schipul keeps high web site accessibility a top priority.

A main focus of web accessibility is to make a site usable for people who are elderly or have disabilities.  Factoring in the way in which different people interact with a site is key to creating more accessible sites.  Often times people with disabilities will use different user agent devices or applications to access sites in a different way, such as a person who is visually impaired using a screen reader.

Why care about web accessibility?

  1. Morally speaking web accessibility is the right thing to do.  Web sites can be accessed by everyone so they should be able to be used by everyone.  This is much like creating a wheelchair ramp for your physical store location.
  2. More recently this is becoming a legal issue.  And sites that are “inaccessible” may soon face lawsuits from various groups.  Basically there is growing support to extend the reach of the Americans with Disabilities Act to the Web.
  3. With the rapid growth of technology people can get to the web from a variety of devices.  If your site is not accessible than you may restrict visibility of the site with new internet devices.
  4. The more accessible your site is to people the greater it will rank in the search engines.

Some of what Schipul does to increase web site accessibility:

  1. Placing the majority of the graphic information in CSS style sheets allowing the textual information to be more readily available.
  2. Including more exact coding to clearly label the different aspects of the site.
  3. Checking the sites with user agent emulators such as Fangs emulator for site accessibility.
  4. Continuing to learn about the changes made in web accessibility to ensure our sites are where they need to be.
  5. Schipul is a member of AIR Houston which strives to increase awareness of web accessibility.

The more clearly your site is designed and the stricter the code, following standard web coding conventions, the more accessible the site will be. The web allows anyone to access your site; web accessibility allows more people to actually use that site.
