Reaching those on the go: Mobile Web users present next major challenge for public relations

The following article, written by Schipuls Creative Director Tim Newton, appears in the May issue of PR Tactics. Last year’s introduction of the iPhone was much more than the launch of the latest high-tech gadget. With its touch screen and zoom-in, zoom-out capabilities, the iPhone was the first handheld device that advanced the Web browsing experience. It signaled the beginning of a new era for Web marketing: the mobile Web. In the months and years to come, expect others to follow Apple’s lead, offering easy-to-use handheld Web browsing devices at more accessible prices. In fact, experts, such as Brian Fling of blueflavor.com, predict that 60 percent of mobile phone users will be browsing the Web on their devices at least once per month within the next two years. Just as Google changed how Web users search for information, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) changed how Web users managed information overload. The emergence of social media also changed how information is generated...

The 3 Motivations of People, Material, Social and Ideological

*** DRAFT *** It is frequently said that everything in life is a negotiation. Certainly convincing a child to do their homework is both a sale and a negotiation and neither is easily accomplished. We all have an agenda that changes constantly over the years and even over the course of the day as our need for food and sleep varies. In the process of this need for persuasion, I propose it is helpful to develop a balanced three pronged approach to persuading people aligned with their motivations. Specifically the goal of this article is to put forth an easy-to-use motivational framework –an actionable framework to design a persuasive system for people. I am setting out by humbly standing on the shoulders of giants such as Mancur Olson, Hardin and Clark & Wilson. I have not done them justice in that my simplifications omit subtleties of their work. Still I like simple, so we will layer on complexity only after first laying three simple foundation bricks in this article. People are...

Social Media Programs Require Consulting, Training and Recruiting

An Agency can not run a Social Media Program for clients. Not without extensive client involvement. In fact I don’t even like the phrase social media program as it implies it is an ad campaign like buying a slot on Comedy Central and two supporting advertisements in Entertainment Weekly. As if social media can be planned and measured like advertising? It aint that simple. Specifically you can not run a Social Media Program for PR from the outside of a client’s organization. You can only help a client engage in social media through consulting, training and helping them recruit the right people. Once these are accomplished you then, and only then, consider promotion. Let me repeat that – helping someone with social media is not a program. It is a consulting, training and recruiting assignment. Social media is fundamentally human resources. Consulting Objectives - Define objectives within the bounds of reality. What is the client trying to accomplish? Help them develop their...

Google AdWords - Why Searching for Your Ad May Be Hurting Your Campaign

When you run a Pay Per Click campaign often times you may get the urge to search for your ads. Although this may seem enticing you are actually hurting your campaign.

Google determines the effectiveness of your campaign by Click Through Rate or CTR. This is measured on how many times your ad is seen and clicked on. If you search for your ad multiple times you will lower your CTR. Google determines an ads worth by the CTR and can lower or raise an ad because of this. If your ad performs well Google will move it up in position on the search results. If Google deems your ad ineffective it could force you to raise your minimum bid in order for your ad to appear. This means increased click costs and a lower Return On Investment(ROI). One bad thing that can happen is your ad is pushed down to another page or taken off altogether.

Starting a new campaign is exciting and we all want to know if we are being seen but the technology behind Google and it's multi billion dollar AdWord system ensures that your ad is up and running in no time and being seen.

Google wants your ad to be effective and it wants it to be clicked on. Google makes money off of your ads and will use it's discretion if it doesn't then Google won't run your ad. So put a little trust in Google and I'm sure you'll be happy

Adieu to Javier Avellan as he explores new business opportunities

We would like to bid a fond farewell to Javier Avellan,
a member of our Business Development team and Schipul family, as he leaves our
organization to explore new business adventures.

As a company that focuses on knowledge sharing and personal
development, it is always a little bittersweet to see a strong team member leave our staff.
But watching our employees discover themselves and reach for new goals
is a success in itself. We are in
the business of not only building great Web sites, but of growing people – a
focus that Javier took very seriously through his extensive reading, internal
training and public speaking.

Javier will be sorely missed, but the entire Schipul team is
very excited for the new opportunities in his path. He will continue to be a friend and colleague to us all for years to
come and we wish him nothing but great experiences and much success.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this
transition or just general Schipul sales inquiries, please email our Business
Development team at (281) 497.6567.

Tendenci Web Marketing Software Continues to Gain Momentum among Nonprofits

Asian American Justice Center Latest to Choose Tendenci to Power Web Site

HOUSTON, May 7, 2008 – Schipul – The Web Marketing Company
(www.schipul.com) today
announced that implementation of Tendenci Web marketing software (www.tendenci.com) continues
to accelerate among nonprofit organizations. The Asian American Justice Center
recently launched its new upgraded Web site, www.advancingequality.org,
becoming the latest nonprofit to move to Tendenci’s suite of Web-based
applications.

“Thanks to Tendenci, our new Web site
now reflects the true depth and breadth of our organization as well as the
value we deliver to the Asian American community,” said Leonie
Campbell-Williams, director of communications with the Asian American Justice Center.
“In addition to providing easy access to the information we need to advance our
mission, the new Web site has a clean, attractive look and feel that is
consistent with our other materials.”

Developed and marketed by Schipul –
The Web Marketing Company, Tendenci enables nonprofit organizations to quickly
and cost-effectively upgrade their Web presence and utilize the latest online
tools, such as Really Simple Syndication, events calendars and e-newsletters. Tendenci
also scales as a nonprofit grows. Everything from Quickbooks exports up to
database integration with data centers is integrated into the suite of
Web-based software applications.

Tendenci’s content management system
(CMS) enables the staff of the Asian
American Justice Center
to update Web content quickly and easily without going through a site
administrator. Keeping the site more dynamic makes it more valuable and keeps
visitors coming back more often.

Nonprofit organizations make up
approximately one-third of the nearly 400 Web sites currently powered by
Tendenci.

Schipul’s presentation will educate PR pros from throughout the Southwest United States on the Internet’s role in this new media world.
Schipul - The Web Marketing Company

The design of your web site is all about producing results. It is design, and as far as that goes we definitely want some artistic elements. It ought to be pleasing to the eye to keep the viewer's attention. But what is the headline? Where exactly does the viewer's eye go, and what message are you giving them when they get there?

OK, now show it to someone else and ask them the same thing. Can we use that knowledge to tweak the web's design to produce even greater sales results? Is the product or service the "hero" of the site? Is the design consistent with the brand? What is the user's call to action?

Does your web site increase your sales?

Our Personal Brands

Branding is a tricky thing. We all have our own brand, and yet we represent a company brand, or a product brand. The great part about branding is that while brand extensions may dilute a brand, additional brands in different categories, in our opinion, actually HELP the associated brands.

The question put before our employees, as well as friends of the company, was:

"What’s your brand? If you can’t answer that question about your own brand in two or three words, your brand’s in trouble." - Al Ries

The answers are being posted on our personal brand pages. This is an experiment started in January of 2008. Last year we started listing our personal brands on the back of our business cards. This is the next logical step. It will be interesting to see where this goes!

So, with a drum roll sounding in the background, here are a few of our personal brand pages.

eschipul - Ed Schipul

SEM Dictionary

Immersed in a little self-study on SEM? Awesome! Here are a few terms that you might run across during your research or that we might use when discussing your search engine marketing and optimization strategies. Heard a term not listed? Call our SEM department at (281) 497-6567. We are happy to help you along the road to search engine success! The basics: Search Engine - a software that searches for information and return sites that provide the most relevant information to the user. Google, Yahoo!, MSN, ASK, AOL etc. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) - marketing and advertising online. How you position your web site online. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - techniques used to increase web site ranking in natural placement of the search engine. Another variable in Search Engine Marketing is Pay-per-click advertising, or PPC, which is a great way to quickly drive targeted traffic to your site. Instead of paying upfront for placing your ad on the search engines, you are only charged when someone actually clicks on your keyword-targeted advertisement. Google, Yahoo, and MSN all offer pay-per-click advertising on their search engine result pages (SERPs), and smaller search engines often show sponsored ads from one of the bigger search engines on their SERPs as well. Just like search engine optimization (SEO) for success in the natural rankings, analysis of your target market and keyword research is definitely required before beginning any type of paid placement campaign. Why Pay-per-click? Site optimization for good ranking in the natural listings takes time and is an ongoing process of adding fresh content and building links. Even if you already...

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a fundamental part of your search engine marketing strategy, and the Schipul Houston Search Engine Optimization team can help you define that strategy. The essence of my experience with the Schipul SEM team is best summarized as professional, results driven performance. I was very pleased to see my web site come up prominently on the first page of the major search engines when searching for our services in Houston during my companys first year in business. Dr. Bernard Arocha Higher rankings in the natural listings (organic listings) of search engines will get your Web site more exposure to your target market if positioned correctly. However, a first page position in a search engine result for a particular term does not ensure success. There are many factors to consider...
